Music Theory Lessons

Ready to learn?

For most people, Music Theory refers to gaining a Grade 5 qualification in order to study practical music at a higher level or support GCSE &/or A level Music study.

Studying Music Theory gives students a greater understanding of key and scale relationships, allowing a basic level of musical analysis. Grade 5 Music Theory is regularly requested as part of a minimum entry requirement by Universities and Conservatoires to study undergraduate Music courses.

Which syllabus do you teach?

At Harrogate Music School, we mainly teach towards the ABRSM syllabus, although students can also be prepared for the MTB or Trinity Syllabus. Popular music theory can also be taught upon request.

What will I learn?

Students will learn all Major and Minor keys, a functional use of 4 clefs, the rules of music notation as well as intervals and time signatures.

How long are lessons?

This very much depends on the timescale for requiring the exam pass. Most students request at leat 30 minutes to start with, before building up before the examination.

Which ages do Harrogate Music School teach on Music Theory and will I need to play an instrument?

No instruments are required for music theory tuition and lessons are recommended for anyone aged 11 upwards or studying an instrument at approximately grade 3 upwards.

Are lessons just for beginners?

Most lessons are for beginners, but refresher courses are available. Some students attend tuition having already achieved grade 5 theory with a view to enhancing A level understanding by studying basic 4-part harmony, melody writing and more advanced music analysis.
