What are Brass Instruments?
Brass instruments produce sound by vibrating the player’s lips against a mouthpiece. Brass instruments are a vital part of the classical, contemporary and film music worlds, known for their powerful and vibrant sound that can captivate audiences of all ages.
What music styles will I learn?
At Harrogate Music School, students will have the opportunity to learn a wide range of musical styles including classical, jazz, brass band and contemporary. The direction of the syllabus is led by the interest of the student which could also include improvisation skills.
How long are lessons?
Lessons are typically tailored to the individual student’s goals and skill level and can last anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the student’s preference and instructor’s recommendation.
Which ages do Harrogate Music School teach on Brass and will I need my own instrument?
Our lessons are open to students of all ages from 7 to adults. While having your own instrument is ideal, we can provide guidance on selecting the right instrument and may have one in stock to hire to you.
What will I learn in a typical lesson?
In a typical 60-minute lesson, students might work on fundamental techniques such as developing breathing and embouchure, forming good performing habits, learning new repertoire, practicing scales and exercises, receiving feedback and guidance on performance, and working on musical interpretation and expression.

Do you have to study towards music exams with HMS?
Prospective customers of Harrogate Music School should know that while studying towards recognized music qualifications is possible on any instrument, it is not a requirement of tuition with HMS. Our focus is on providing quality instruction tailored to each student’s goals and interests, whether they aim for formal qualifications or simply want to enhance their musical skills for personal enjoyment and growth.
